Wharton Stays On Top Of 2015 U.S. News Ranking

Wharton Stays On Top Of 2015 U.S. News Ranking by: John A. Byrne on September 09, 2014 | 0 Comments Comments 7,017 Views September 9, 2014The University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School held on to its status at the No. 1 undergraduate business school in the nation in U.S. News World Reports new 2015 ranking of the best colleges published today (Sept. 9). MIT and UC-Berkeley were tied for second place, while the University of Michigans Ross School took  fourth, and New York Universitys Stern School of Business came in fifth. The only change this year among the top five undergraduate programs was a two-place slippage by Michigan which had been in a three-way tie for second last year. But the big winners among the new Top 25 schools are  Michigan State and the University of Georgia, which both climbed six places to finish 21st where eight different undergraduate business programs are  in a dead tie. The business schools at the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisc onsin also did well, each rising three spots this year to both earn a tie at a rank of 15.Indiana Universitys Kelley School is  the only Top 10 entry to gain two places, finishing at a rank of eighth. The University of Southern Californias Marshall School also edged up two spots to gain an improved ranking of 11th. Losing ground  in the latest updated ranking is Ohio State Universitys undergraduate business program, which fell four places to a rank of 20th, and the University of Maryland, down three places, to 21st from 18th last year.A SIMPLE RANKING METHODOLOGY BASED ON PEER ASSESSMENTCompared to U.S. News’ overall ranking for national universities, its undergraduate business program list is a stripped-down, no frills version. It is based entirely on the magazine’s survey of business school deans and senior faculty, many of whom vote on the basis of a program’s reputation–not its true quality. Critics argue that these rankings are little more than a popularity or beauty contest. Asking college officials to rate the relative merits of other schools about which they know nothing, they say, is a particularly empty exercise because a school’s reputation is driven in large part by U.S. News own rankings.Still, these peer assessments collected by the magazine represent a rough guide to the business school landscape. If a parent or applicant was in the position to ask the deans and professors the same question, they would most likely give significant credibility to the answers. U.S. News surveys two officials from each school  accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  In the spring of 2014, participants were asked to rate the quality of all programs they were familiar with on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished). None of the schools on the list achieved a perfect score of 5. The highest score went to Wharton at 4.8. Some  38 percent of those surveyed responded, a two percentage p oint improvement over last year in the response rate. The methodology results in numerous ties up and down the list. There are a half dozen schools tied for the rank of 45th and five schools tied at 29th. Even more astonishingly, U.S. News lists 11 different schools placing 51st in its survey. Those ties essentially demonstrate the inability of respondents to significantly differentiate the programs from each other, making the ranking less valuable to users. This gets incredibly silly. All told, this year the magazine assigned numerical ranks to well over 400 different undergraduate business programs, with 39 schools placing  at the highest posted rank of 391.U.S. News  asked those same respondents for nominations of the 10 best programs in business specialty areas such as accounting, marketing and finance.  The magazine said that programs  receiving the most mentions in each area are  ranked in descending order. A school or program had to  receive seven or more nomination s in a specific  specialty area to be listed. Texas, Illinois, Brigham Young and Notre Dame were the top schools  in accounting, while Babson, MIT, USC, Indiana and Wharton took top honors  in entrepreneurship. Wharton, NYU Stern, Michigan, MIT, and UC Berkeley were at the top in finance.  As is often typical on these lists, the further down you go the more likely you are to see bigger swingslargely because the differences among the schools are statistically insignificant. So small changes can make bigger changes than expected. Among the Top 50, the University of Pittsburghs business school saw the single largest improvement in its rankinga full ten-point jump to 39 this year from 49 last year. Babson College saw a healthy five-place increase, finishing with a rank of 29th from 34 a year ago.Southern Methodist Universitys business school too the biggest beating among the Top 50 programs. It dropped seven places to 45th, from 38th last year.(See following page for this years ranking of the top undergraduate business programs) Page 1 of 3123 »

Essay on Comparing The Cats Table and Death of a Salesman

Both literary works, The Cats Table and Death of a Salesman demonstrate that everything is not always as it seems. Society tends to take things out of context, thus changing the outlook society has. Not everything is always as it seems. This idea is presented through the use of setting, point of view and symbols. There is always more to things than what meets the eye and everything is not always as it seems. Setting plays a large role in initiating the story and setting the feeling, the entire story revolves around setting. But with this in question, there are numerous arguments. Some will argue that many athletes have their tuition paid in full so there is no need for additional money, while others will argue that they are at college for an education not a paycheck. According to an article on NCAA and college sports, â€Å"The college sports industry generates $11 billion in annual revenues. Fifty colleges report annual revenues that exceed $50 million. Meanwhile, five colleges report annual revenues that exceed $100 million† (Mitchell). I believe it is time we begin to compensate college athletes for the enormous amount of revenue they generate for the NCAA. Human Resource Management Principles

Question: The primary purpose of this assessment task is to assist students to develop skills in the application of Human Resource Management (HRM) principles, work-life balance theories and models in the analysis of the present and future role of the HRM function in organisations. The assessment task encourages exploration of the effectiveness of the HRM functions (work-life balance, flexible work arrangements etc.) in dynamic environments and how that effectiveness should be evaluated. The secondary purpose of this assignment is to give students the opportunity to enhance their research, analysis, critical thinking and written communications skills including the identification and development of an argument. Answer: Abstract In this particular study, we have highlighted the pros and cons of work life balance in respect to flexibility in work structure of corporate. Flexibility is giving the employees an option to work less or more according to the need of the organization. This in turn can increase the workload of some efficient employees and can adversely affect the entire organization. Key highlights of this essay are whether flexibility has moved from its main motive or not, affect of excessive workload on the employees and the measures to be taken by employers to motivate employees to work for longer hours during economic downturn balancing their work life. Keywords: Work life balance, flexibility, economic downturn, employees performance, economic crisis, human resource. Introduction In todays world, work life balance is one of the most important issues that are raised by employers all over the world. In order to maintain balance in work life, flexibility has been adopted by most of the organization in which employees are given option to work for lesser hours when demand is low and work for more hours in the period of downturn due to economic crisis (Anderson et al., 2013). Those employees who are willing to work for longer hours during crisis period must be rewarded and assured that when the company will turn around then they will have to work for lesser hours again. In this approach of maintaining flexibility in the work life balance sometime organization faces some hurdles like over load of work on few efficient employees of the organization that in turn adversely affect their productive and give rise to health related issues(Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). Discussion In the context of work life balance, Juliet Brouke the consulting partner of Deloitte Australia has raised the issue that it had adversely affected the idea of flexibility and moved from its original model (Balance, 2013). Previously industries used to face huge problems regarding acquisition of talent from different sources and retention of those talents. Now a days employers are ready to make in different sectors to as to diversify the openings in various business sections. They are now focusing on reduction of the working time along with providing the facilities for part time jobs and overtime to improve the flexibility along with maintaining work life balance (Bartlett, 2013). The concept of work life balance means providing an opportunity to the employees to balance their work life along with their personal life as this will definitely improve the implementation of flexibility in corporate work culture. According to Juliet Brown, the flexibility in work life is not been evenly spread throughout the entire workforce. Because of that, most of the employees in an organization are willing to work less than their scheduled working hours whereas some of the employees are willing to work overtime (Bennett and Ho, 2014). Because of which work pressure is being shifted to few employees, which in turn is adversely affect their productivity and unwillingness to work in long run. Employers are also using the benefit of flexibility in a malicious way at the time of economic emergency by using their efficient employees for more than regular hours by paying them overtime allowances and other perquisite while reducing the work time of less efficient employees. By this way, they are mobilizing the resources of the company towards higher productivity as payments to the employees are based on their working time (Berman et al., 2015). This strategy may be beneficial in the short term at the time of eco nomic crisis but in long run, this will affect the productivity of those efficient employees. At the time of economic crisis, a company may face decline in the demand of products from clients. In that period they can reduce the work time of the employees by availing leaves, pay wages and salaries accordingly, and reduce cost (Bratton and Gold, 2012). Whereas at the time of high demand employers can take the advantage of flexibility and increase the production by motivating the employees to work for longer hours voluntarily. However, in some companies implementation of work life balance does not affect the redundancy, as it is unavoidable (Burg-Brown, 2013). The executive officers have identified the advantage of flexibility in work life as they can minimize cost and idleness of the employees and workers. They know that staffs need to be committed towards their work so that the productivity of the company increases. The employers knows that flexibility is all about managing human resources efficiently in order to the goals and objectives of the organization whether the employees are working full time or half time or taking leaves or working overtime. They know that at the time of economic downtime idealness and redundancy will be higher but this economic situation will improve in future and then they can acquire new talents. The employees also knew that they have to work for longer hours sometimes in downtime for which they will get extra payment in term of monetary and non-monetary perquisites as well as get recognition for that (Freeburg et al., 2014). In short-run productivity does not always means getting extra out of a smaller amoun t. Therefore, when organization requires superior levels of commitment they could find themselves achieving low levels of commitment. In the present day, companies are trying to achieve high sales quota with lower cost to increase their profit and create value for their stakeholders. In order to achieve this target employers know that employees need to give their 100% commitment toward what they are capable of doing (Gangwisch, 2014). This would also affect the working hours of the employees and executives since in multinational companies, conferences and meetings held through telecommunication and teleconferencing. This also saves the cost of travelling from one place to another but at the same time increases the working hours of the executives, as they have to make video calls at night even due to diverse time zones. Until there is an improvement in the structure of the organizational operational efficiency with respect to idleness programs companies are going to harm themselves in order to achieve more with less resources (Hendry, 2012). It is also a well-known fact that efficient employees may give higher produ ction but at the same time, they will get exhausted at certain point of time. Therefore, it can be said that flexibility has moved from its unique idea to a certain extent, which cannot be avoided. Advantages and disadvantages are coupled with it and a systematic management with right approach can lead to proper utilization of management maintaining work life balance. Generally, employees are required to work for longer hours in order to achieve their targets and complete their jobs on scheduled time. They need to be responsible so that company can achieve its objectives and mission. Depending upon the circumstances employees have to either work overtime or reduce the number of leaves taken in order to achieve their targets. They are also given an option to work from home so that they can balance their work life. However, all this situations have negative impact on the productivity of the employees in the end. It harms both the employees and the peoples who are in personal relationship with him. It is seen that working for longer hours can negatively affects the system of human body. Problems like fatigue, sleepiness; negative attitude affects the human system, which in turn affects their performance decreasing production quality and quantity of the company (Hofcker and Knig, 2013). There are many risk associated with the working for longer hours, which are abnormalities in social life, troublesome, control over the employee, job lateness etc. all this factors are to be kept in mind while motivating employees for working for extra time because this in turn can increase the production and operational cost resulting in lower profitability. This also affects the society around them as unintentional errors like road accidents, medical problems arises due to excessive workload. Employees who are working 24*7 face problems decreasing concentration, health related issues, and diseases are not properly diagnosed (Jones, Burke and Westman, 2013). This in turn is decreasing the overall performance of the company affecting its reputation in long run. So if employees are willing to work for more hours it has bad effects on their health and on their social and personal life if they are not given proper incentives. In order to reduce the adverse effect of working longer hours on the employees management must take proper steps to motivate them and make them know their value and importance in the organization (Lewis, 2014). Employees must be reminded of their responsibility and commitment towards the organization. If the management thinks that it is necessary to hear and understand the grievances of the employees and hear from them the problems faced by, they in the organization then they can also do that. After that, management can strategize a proper plan in order to increase their productivity by working longer hours. In addition, the management should look after the imbalance in economic and social movements made by the company in terms of production, operational and financial cost, revenue and profitability of the company as a wh ole. Managers play a pivotal role in motivating the employees the employees to work for extra hours. Managers should guide the employees leading by an example and motivate them to finish their job in time so that employees are not required to take extra stress. The employees must be adequately trained and proper testing of their efficiency must be done to understand their expertise level. Proper management of time is required to finish the job in scheduled time. Activities, which are very crucial and important and required to completed on time, needs to be separated from casual work. Managers should conduct training programs to increase communication skills between the employees Managers are required to have a clear understanding about the goals and objectives of the company so that they can motivate and encourage the employees accordingly. Managers should treat all of their employees equally and partiality should not be there within an organization so that employees are not de-motivated. Managers should be responsible and efficient in making strategic long-term decisions because of which they must be able to allocate works among the employees. Managers must recognize employees when they achieve the desired level of satisfaction and reward them according to keep them encouraged. Managers need to take help of different management tools to measure the performance of the employees so that resources of the company are utilized properly. Different strategies must be developed for employees who are willing to work for late hours so that their productivity is not harmed and their grievances must be addressed. Managers must also push the employees to take their leaves to reduce stress. Therefore, from the above discussion it can be understand that managers play an effective when they need to motivate their employees to work for extra hours (Lewis et al., 2014). They must make sure that working extra hours and late nights are not adversely affecting the productivity and health of the individual employees and the profitability of the organization as a whole. Managers must give proper incentives and benefits to their employees for working extra hours and coordinate with them so that they can also maintain their balance in work life. Now a day employers role in motivating the employees to work for longer hours in the period of economic downturn is gaining very much importance. Employers are more focusing on the health related issues of their employees rather than giving them monetary and non-monetary benefits, allowances, incentives and perquisites such as providing companies flat, car etc. They are now providing medical support, fitness trainer and various services like cleaning, laundry etc to their employees to minimize their stress to some extent. Employees are given benefits after their retirement like pension, gratuity and leave encashment, so that when the down time is over; the work force remaining can understand their responsibility and commitment towards the company, work for the overall betterment of the organization as a whole, and achieve the targets set (Lyness and Judiesch, 2014). In todays world, competition in the market is increasing rapidly and employers are creating pressure on the employees to achieve the set targets maintaining the balance in work life. This is turn is increasing the stress of the employees and affecting their health condition. Many a times financial crisis may lead to cancellation of existing companys policies or postponement of it for a short period. Risk of losing jobs at the time of economic downtime can create stress that may cause health related issues. Employers must motivate the employees by assuring them that company can come over the downtime within very short period if the supports of the employees are there. If they work for longer hours at the time of crisis then when the company turn around they will have to work for lesser time again and will be given benefits and incentives accordingly (Lyonette, 2013). At the time of economic crisis, every resources of the company being land, labor and capital must be allocated properly do that proper utilization can be made. The employers must motivate the employees to complete their scheduled work in time so that they could find time for their family and society. This will reduce the non-completion of work within deadlines and proper management of time and resources to get the desired results. The employees must be adequately trained to minimize wastage of time and resources (Purce, 2014). Every jobs must be divided into several sub parts, focus must be given to the important subpart, and so that utilization of resources is towards valuable subparts. Due to higher work pressure grievances of the employees increases which leads to decrease in their productivity. To balance it proper communication between the employees and employers must be assured by the management of the company so that employees can address their problem to the managers. This will lead to harmony and peace within the organization and teamwork will increase the productive of the workers. In case of any crisis in the economy, the employees must be motivated in order to achieve the optimal production. If there is cooperation between the employees then it will encourage the employer-employee relationship within the organization and a feeling of commitment towards achievement of organizational goals and objectives will grow among them. Moreover, the employers should give confidence to all their employees that downtime will not last forever and company will turn around in the near future so that they work toward the achievement of the objectives of the company. Employers should give proper incentives to the employees for working longer hours like overtime allowances and other facilities (Shanafelt et al., 2012). Proper reward mechanism must be implemented within the organization to recognize the hard work of the employees in the time of downturn and reward them accordingly to satisfy them. In addition, employers should take measures to maintain the balance in the work life so that working overtime does not harm their family and social etiquettes. From the above discussion, it can be said that if employees adopt a combined way of motivating the employees toward working extra hours providing various rewards and incentives balancing their personal and social life then balance in work life can be maintained in the downtime due to economic crisis by adopting flexibility. The main research streams of investigation found in literature include: buying center structure and factors that influence it; influence of members of the buying center; and communication between members of the buying center. We called him Llumpy from after about a week an early onset at the school. He was tremendously...large to say the least. He was very overweight and walked with a bit of a waddle. He fat, and came into school so disheveled every day. His uniform was dirt stained and untucked, and his hair was a matted mess. Neither hair nor clothes looked as if itd been washed in weeks. Interpersonal and Intercultural Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Interpersonal and Intercultural Paper - Essay Example The senior management must be willing to tolerate dissent in order to ensure informed and responsible decision-making in appointing effective departmental management heads. Richard Johanneson (2002) concluded that ethical issues that arise in human behavior have a significant impact on other people when the behavior entails conscious choice of means and ends, and when the behavior is judged by standards of right and wrong. According to utilitarian ethics, interpersonal communication ethics must aim at benefiting all parties and should focus on the consequences of the decisions or actions. On the other hand, virtue ethics requires the communicators to respect the moral character and dignity of a person during communication and avoid unethical practices such as deception, coercion, tapping telephones and inappropriate jokes. The current changes in departmental management heads have shifted the perceptions of power in the hospital thus leading to conflicts. The event has generated power imbalances and misuse of power thus hindering effective communication and interpersonal relationships in the hospital. The junior staff members perceive the new departmental heads as very powerful due to the position power attached to their title in the hospital. The new management of the department has excess informational power and have hindered effective horizontal communication in the hospital.Conflicts at the hospital can lead to hostility and resentment thus hurting interpersonal relationships between the employees.

Effects of ICT Essay Example for Free

Effects of ICT Essay New Technologies The new technologies in the computer industrial have made major advances. This has opened new jobs but have also lost job. Things can be done faster and over night. It has become easier and faster to send thing across the world. Mail has become so fast that you van now see events and meet with people in video with people that are on the other side of the world. From the invention of the computer people has tried to make them smaller and faster. In the beginning they made 3 forms of computer, apple Macs, IBM mainframes, and desktop pc. When this was going on IBM were leading the way with the mainframes but as IBM moved into making mainframes the desktop pc began to get popular. IBM was forced out of the industry. Since then they have lost out on a lot of the market. This led the market open and has been filled with other companies. Since then there has been a lot of new technologies like faster internet and the need for speed as increased and the need better communication between people all over the world. Advantages of ICT The advantage of ICT is that it is fast and is cheaper to run than people. This has led to a revolution in building on production lines. For example in Ford at the car plant in Dagenham they have replaced the working line that once had many people to a line made of robots to do one job at a time. Another advantage of ICT is that is easier to talk to people on the other side of the world form your home computer. With advances in technologies we can have video meeting and conference with people across the world. The world has now become small. Disadvantages of ICT The disadvantages of ICT is that cause of millions have job have been lost due the revolution it has left millions of people out of work. This has also left people with no money, but when the car was invented what happened to the horse and cab driver. They trained in driving cars. So people who lost their jobs should train in the technologies and adapt to the changes. An animal in the environment that has a changed his eco system changes to fit in so why cant we. Effects of ICT in the work place ICT has greatly effect the work place because of new ways of communicating with other people across the world and the people that would have jobs like printing or running printing presses. They jobs would have gone to save money with the bosses and they would have been replaced with jobs like computer operators. This would be cheaper for the management and faster. It has also changed the world does business in transfers and moving money from account to account. With the invention of the Internet speed will only get faster and better quality will always come on the market. This means when you pay for goodies the money is transferred directly into the supplier accounts. It doesnt just work on a small market but when you buy stokes and shares they are paid directly and the value can go up or down according to want you do. In offices these days they will put a computer work station at every desk to have easy access to the documents and other personal or business resources. This is capable cause of they network that the computer is connect to. The environmental Effects of ICT The effects of Computers in the environment is that we dont use as much paper as we used to so therefore there have been a lot less trees cut down due to this. With no computer powered machine to cut the wood there is also a lot less wastage from other forms of waste from the wood and the paper being wasted. In an older office they would use a lot of paper to write things down to remember things. This made people use more paper and when there was a memo going round the office they would use the paper to write it on to. This would have meant the why would have use millions of tons of waste paper every year. With and e system they would use and email to save paper because it is faster and more efficient to get a message to someone. This means that people would save so much more money than they spend on paper. Now they only would use paper in a letter that they would print off and give to the people that they would go to. The Social, Moral and Ethical Issues of Computers These issues are to do with the way we use things like credit cards and debit cards in our socialites today. These cards are used to borrow money to pay for other things like clothes and food. This is always using to pay as a substitute to money. These are known as credit cards. Credit means to borrow and pay back at the end of the month or the end of the period that you have borrowed that money. Another effect of Computer is the health and safety of them. Computer can cause stress and muscle pain in later life because you have to sit down and look at a monitor, which could give off radiation. These problems all need to be looked at when putting in an e system into a work place. Personal Privacy The issue of personal privacy because of computer they have a large amount of data in large database about different people across the UK. This can mean that they can sell your data to other people across the UK and therefore the junk mail is increased. These database hold information like your name, age, phone number, where you live, email address and in some database bank details. The information in these databases can be used for junk mail and other things that is not need for you. These are used for gaining information on people. Data Protection Act The data protection act of 1984 says that data that has been acquired lawfully from then person that the data concerned. It should also be up to date. There was a new data protection act of 1998 says that data can be build up over time but I needs to be keep lawfully and not given away for unknown uses, They should be given a small amount of information that would need to be transferred between two companies. Valid Data It is important that data is kept up to date by the companies cause if it is stored on a computer over a long period of time this has to been change in order if someone was to change there address or change the job. This is done by legitimate sources for the persons that have been put in to this. Everyone should be very careful on who they give out there data to. Security of Data The companies that also have the data need to keep are stored in a safe place and have it up to date. This has protected your files from hackers by using an encryption of data. This means that your data has to be secure in all ways.

Artificial Intelligence Essay -- Technology, Computers

Of all the technological developments of the modern age, none is as complex as artificial intelligence. The idea that a non-human, manufactured entity could advance to a point of emulating human behavior is enough to make people shiver. The idea of something so advanced that we will not be able to tell the difference may be even worse. In 1961 Philip Dick wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. It portrayed a world with these exact characteristics. Artificial Intelligence had advanced to a point of near-perfect human replication. In creating this world, Dick was echoing the speculations and fears of a.i. that had build up by that time. It would then continue to influence those opinions in the years after. It is necessary to look at the development of artificial intelligence in order to put this idea into context. The concept of intelligent and aware constructs began to emerge in the 1950s and 60s as several scientists in many fields came together to discuss the possibilities of advanced computer research. The first major step was a scientific conference at Dartmouth College in 1956. Here, the general concepts and possible paths of research for a.i. were fleshed out. As described in Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, this conference was â€Å"the birth of artificial intelligence.† This was mostly a theoretical stage yet attending experts predicted that with a huge investment, working technology could be available in a generation (16). After being officially established, a.i. research and discovery exploded. Computer programs, a brand new idea, were already conquering algebra problems and speech recognition. Some could even reproduce English (18). It was clear that arti ficial intelligence research was going to be at the fo... .... Each stage of development increases our reliance and this in turn promotes advancement. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep described a dark world where artificial intelligences and humanity came into a form of conflict. Its predictions and ramifications are not easily dismissed and hold true even today. We are already seeing a.i. surpass humans in some fields. IBM's WATSON has passed humanity in terms of intellect. It will be some time before it is self-aware of that fact, but it is a milestone nonetheless. We also have artificial â€Å"slaves† in some small sense of the word. Machines to much of the heavy labor previously done by man. Massive assembly plants now only employ a few technicians to watch overt the computers. While a far cry away from slavery, the process has begun. We are addicted too we usefulness of machines and the addiction is impossible to cure.
